hard suit, soft suit

This week at the AERA conference I've noticed three distinct types of suits worn by men (and women). What I call the "hard suit" is the typical "power suit" -- that crisply pressed, dark blue, smooth surface suit. Another example, or accessory, or casual version is the black leather jacket. Ideally, this type of outfit moves with the body fluidly while still appearing hard. Think 80s IBM, or The Apprentice. The other type is the soft suit: tweed, wool, plaid, or other somewhat "frumpy" patterns and fabrics, in browns or other colors. The leather coat version is brown, or suede. Sweaters are a potential accessory. Think Professor Plum, or Colonel Mustard. The third is the "style" suit: fashion, flair, color, etc. Think
Disco, or Zoot suit. Power, Intelligence, or Style. I'm pretty much a soft suit guy.
